Housing Policy Conference, June 13, 2008

At the CFAA Housing Policy Conference on June 13, 2008, in Saint John, New Brunswick, rental housing providers heard about two key issues.

Dr. Allan Maslove
presented a summary of property tax regimes for rental housing across Canada,
commented on Nova Scotia's pending property tax reforms, and
suggested what the impacts would be of a reduction in the New Brunswick double tax on all rental units. Attendees discussed how the goal of tax fairness can be advanced.

Dr. Marion Steele
presented a review of existing Canadian provincial housing allowance programs in the context of the rental housing markets and housing policies across Canada
suggested a program of portable housing allowances which could be adopted in New Brunswick, and
presented estimates of the cost of such a program and the impact it would have on housing affordability.
