| CFAA Housing Allowance Conference 2006
|
| |
CFAA held its first Housing Conference on Friday,
June 9, 2006, in Ottawa at Ottawa City Hall together with the Eastern
Ontario Landlord Organization (EOLO). The conference expanded the
knowledge about how housing allowance programs work and what they
achieve.
Housing allowances are direct payments to low-income renters who are
having difficulty affording suitable housing. Housing allowances are
used at the national level in almost all countries with advanced
economies. Most countries find that housing allowances provide
cost-effective housing help, while preserving choice for low income
renters. Housing allowance programs are being expanded in Quebec,
Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Participants learned more
about housing allowances, and why they are a positive tool for Canadian
housing policy.
The Attendees
The attendees included housing policy decision makers, policy advisors
and officials at all three levels of government, including CMHC as well
as landlords in the non-profit and private sectors, and housing
activists and advocates of all views.
The Organizers
The Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations (CFAA) represents the
owners and managers of more than one million private rental suites
through 16 member associations across Canada.
The Eastern Ontario Landlord Organization (EOLO) represents the owners
and managers of more than 34,000 rental units in Ottawa. EOLO has been
the voice of Ottawa landlords to municipal and provincial decision
makers since 1990.
