Housing Policy Conference, June 13, 2008

At the CFAA Housing Policy Conference on June 13, 2008, in Saint John, New Brunswick, rental housing providers heard about:

Tax Policy Conference, June 8, 2007

CFAA held its first Tax Policy Conference on Friday, June 8, 2007, in Edmonton. The conference reviewed the current income tax position of rental housing. It then examined what information and arguments are needed to obtain tax reform, as well as what lessons rental housing providers and housing advocates can take from past industry lobbying efforts. The Conference concluded with discussion groups on different possible tax reforms, and a plenary session to identify CFAA's choice for our next tax lobbying goal.

Delegates to the Tax Policy Conference strongly agreed that it was well organized and worthwhile. One delegate wrote, "I really liked the discussions and sharing of ideas and experiences." Another wrote, "The afternoon was a perfect focus for the CFAA. Great for developing consensus [on our tax reform goals]."

Housing Policy Conference, June 9, 2006

CFAA held its first Housing Conference on Friday, June 9, 2006, in Ottawa at Ottawa City Hall together with the Eastern Ontario Landlord Organization (EOLO). The conference expanded the knowledge about how housing allowance programs work and what they achieve.

Housing allowances are direct payments to low-income renters who are having difficulty affording suitable housing. Housing allowances are used at the national level in almost all countries with advanced economies. Most countries find that housing allowances provide cost-effective housing help, while preserving choice for low income renters. Housing allowance programs are being expanded in Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Participants learned more about housing allowances, and why they are a positive tool for Canadian housing policy.
