Text of Minister Solberg's message

Minister Solberg:

Good morning. Bonjour.

I am happy to be able to send greetings to you at the Canadian Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations.

First, I want to begin by thanking you. The work you do and the expertise you provide in helping Canadians find high quality affordable housing is very important. (and the same in French)

We all know rental units are an important affordable housing option for people in all walks of life. They help young people and families just starting out. They provide seniors with comfort and convenience to maintain a healthy life style and a healthy connection to the community. They provide comfortable housing for new Canadians. And for others pursuing career opportunities or post-secondary education, a rental apartment provides the flexibility to take on new challenges.

I’ve been able to meet with your President John Dickie and others from your organization, and I want you to know that the CFAA is a valued contributor of ideas and input. We agree that housing solutions aren’t exclusively the domain of the government, and that the private sector has a very important role to play. We particularly appreciate your policy work on housing allowances and rent supplements, and your suggestions on ways to increase the supply of affordable private rental housing through tax policy changes.

I also appreciate your support as we look at our current housing programs to ensure that they are making a real difference and achieving concrete results. Thank you for your offer to participate in CHMC’s evaluation of the Affordable Housing Initiative.

Right now in Canada, taxes are falling, commodities are booming, jobs are being created and the housing market is strong. (and the same in French)

Your industry makes a valuable contribution to communities and the country. Your importance to communities and to the country is poised to grow, and our government looks forward to continuing our work with you to help house Canadians, sustain economic growth and contribute to stronger, connected communities.

Thank you and best wishes on a successful meeting. (and the same in French)
